How to use Split PDF
- Select one unencrypted PDF, or drop it into the upload area. The file limit is 50 MB.
- Choose Custom page ranges, Fixed number of pages, Select individual pages, or Every page separately.
- For custom ranges, enter pages such as 1-3, 5-6. For fixed-size groups, enter a whole number of pages per file. In selected-page mode, click the page previews or type your selection.
- Review the page and output-file count. Choose Split PDF, then download each PDF or download all results in a ZIP. Open the results to check them.
Worked example
A six-page PDF can be divided into sections without changing the source file.
Input
Document: six pages Mode: Custom page ranges Ranges: 1-2, 3-6 Combine selected ranges: off
Output
fyrepress-part-1.pdf: pages 1 and 2 fyrepress-part-2.pdf: pages 3, 4, 5 and 6
Each comma-separated range becomes a separate PDF. With Fixed number of pages set to 4, the same input produces a four-page PDF followed by a two-page PDF. The last group contains the remaining pages.
Choose the right split mode
Custom page ranges creates one PDF for each comma-separated selection. For example, 1-3, 5 creates a three-page file and a one-page file. Add range appends another editable range. Enable Combine selected ranges to put those selections into a single output, in the order entered.
Fixed number of pages groups consecutive pages using your chosen group size. Every page separately creates a one-page PDF for each source page. Select individual pages lets you select previews or type pages and ranges; each comma-separated selection becomes a file unless Combine is enabled.
Preview and interpret your results
The preview grid shows real document pages. Selected pages have a highlighted border. Page numbers refer to positions in the PDF, not printed page labels inside the document. A typed selection keeps its entered order and can intentionally repeat a page; clicking previews changes the selection to unique pages in document order.
The output summary shows the number of selected page copies and resulting PDFs before processing. Previews are displayed in groups of 48 for large documents; use Next pages to view more. A preview rendering failure is labeled clearly and does not by itself prevent page copying.
Processing, supported files, and limitations
The PDF is read and split in this browser using PDF processing libraries loaded from FyrePress. PDF contents are not sent to the PHP tool API. Cancellation is checked between processing steps; a current library operation may finish before cancellation takes effect. Original files remain unchanged.
Choose one valid, unencrypted PDF of at most 50 MB. Corrupt or encrypted PDFs are rejected. Large or complex documents can exceed available browser memory even below the file limit. Keep the originals: document-level bookmarks, interactive forms, attachments, and digital signatures should not be assumed to survive page copying.
Common range mistakes
Enter whole page numbers from 1 through the source page count. A range must run forwards, so 5-2 is invalid. A blank selection, letters, and pages outside the document are rejected. A fixed group size must be a whole number between 1 and the page count.
Check your selection before downloading. Overlapping ranges can copy the same page more than once, and an omitted page will not appear in the output. This tool separates existing pages; it does not redact information, compress files, or edit the content of a page.
Frequently asked questions
Can I split every page into a separate PDF?
Yes. Choose Every page separately, then Split PDF. Download individual results or download them together as a ZIP.
Can I combine several ranges in one file?
Yes. In custom-range or selected-page mode, enable Combine selected ranges into one PDF. Ranges are copied in the order entered.
Do PDFs upload to a server?
PDF contents stay in this browser. The website may load normal page assets, settings, and consent-dependent services, but PDF processing does not upload your document.
Can I split by file size or use a password-protected PDF?
This tool splits by page selection or page count. It does not split by a target file size, unlock encrypted files, or compress PDFs.
